About the Graun’s

Born in Wahrenbrück (district of Elbe-Elster), the three brothers reached out to Merseburg and especially Berlin after having finished their musical education. The fairly unkown August Friedrich became cathedral cantor in Merseburg. His younger brothers Carl Heinrich and Johann Gottlieb worked in ordinary of Frederick the Second at the Prussian Court. As Carl Heinrich became court kapellmeister and founded the Royal Opera House ‘Unter den Linden’, his brother Johann Gottlieb was appointed as Royal Prussian concert master and orchestra director by Frederick the Second.
